Our Pledge

The faculty and staff at Downey High School are dedicated to creating and sustaining an academic and social environment that promotes student learning and success.  To fulfill this mission, we promise to provide educational opportunities and the necessary support for students to become academically successful through a challenging, standards-driven curriculum.   We promote the practical application of knowledge and guide students towards career paths that are integrated into the curriculum.  To become productive members of a diverse society, we provide opportunities for students to build connections by actively promoting student involvement in extracurricular activities.  As a result, we strive to prepare all students intellectually and socially to be successful members of society.

Viking Expected School Wide Learning Results (ESLRs)

Downey High School will prepare its graduates to be lifelong learners who:

 

1. Communicate Effectively by:

       Writing Clearly
             Utilizing the writing process across the curriculum
             Organizing content clearly for the target audience
             Writing for a variety of purposes (e.g. expository, persuasive, narrative, technical,    

             analytical) 

             Using standard grammar, syntax, and other techniques that give writing power and

             impact

           

       Speaking and Listening Effectively
           Conveying ideas clearly and coherently with a command of the English language
           Using presentation techniques to engage audience attention which included   

           enunciation, using eye contact, engaging others in discussion of material,

           asking questions for clarifications, responding appropriately.
           Using appropriate body language

       Using an Appropriate Communication Form
           Communicating ideas to an audience (e.g. verbal, artistic, written, mathematical,
           email, electronic discussion board, etc.), and using this form clearly and effectively.

2. Who Demonstrate Creative and Analytical Thinking by:
        Reading Effectively:
            Demonstrating the ability to decode, paraphrase, summarize, analyze, and apply

            knowledge of textual material to class assignments
            Identifying central themes and ideas
            Organizing and interpreting data and graphs to draw conclusions and make

            predictions

        Applying Skills and Concepts
            Building on prior knowledge
            Making cross-curricular connections and applies learning to problems and real-life

            situations

        Making Decisions and Solving Problems
            Using a variety of resources to access needed information
            Solving multi-step problems strategically, logically, creatively, and independently
            Creating and asking relevant questions

3. Work competently as individuals and in groups
            by setting priorities
            by developing plans of action
            by evaluating progress
            by completing tasks
            by accomplishing goals

4. Demonstrate responsible citizenship
            by conducting themselves appropriately
            by observing the rights of others
            by contributing to their community
            by respecting individual and cultural diversity
            by appreciating our nation's heritage and culture
